Questions and Answers

What is an Associate?

Urban Sanctuary Associates are those who, feeling a call towards deeper commitment and investment in the ministry of the Urban Sanctuary, take the Associate Vow committing themselves to involvement in the ministry of the Urban Sanctuary and to living the type of lifestyle the Urban Sanctuary promotes.

Why do we take a vow?

There are a number of biblical references to vows, such as Acts 21:23-24, Acts 18:17-19, and Leviticus 22 and 27.  Those who take a vow set themselves apart to God for specific purpose or commitment.  It is not some sort of secret tryst, nor is it meant as a sign of superior commitment or spirituality.  It is a way to emphasize and add specific accountability to the commitment that is being made.  God regards our vows very seriously (Numbers 30:2) and so must we.

Are there benefits to being an Associate?

While being an Associate is more about investment and commitment than receiving benefit, the Urban Sanctuary does provide retreat space and events for Associates as outlined in the Associate Vow.   Plus, twice a year a member of the Urban Sanctuary staff meets with each Associate to give them support and accountability in keeping the vow.

What is the Associate Retreat?

One weekend a year, usually in May or June, the Urban Sanctuary Associates and those who are interested in becoming Associates gather for fellowship, community sharing, fun, and worship.  The retreat is also time of assessing our commitment to the Associate Vow and affirming or reaffirming our vow for the coming year.

How do you become an Associate?

The Associate Retreat is the primary time for becoming an Associate.  In context of the community of Associates we affirm and reaffirm our vows together for support and accountability.   This is not meant to be exclusive, but to give people time prior to the retreat to join the monthly fellowship times and consider what it means to commit to the Associate Vow.

Are Urban Sanctuary Staff Associates?

Yes, the Urban Sanctuary staff also commit to the Associate Vow.

What else is involved in being an Associate?

The vow outlines what an Associate commits to, and the Associates receive regular email updates regarding prayer requests and Urban Sanctuary news.
