I heard Brian Williams say this week that Canada has finally matured. In his career, covering 13 Olympics, Vancouver 2010 was a defining moment for him. He noticed that Canadians of almost every ethnic origin cheered for Canada or proudly wore clothing proclaiming Canadian pride. Sam asked the question last week about Christian maturity – what really is it? Maybe there are many answers and I loved the one that he gave but I’d like to offer another one.
Just as Canadians rally around Canada so Christians rally around the desires of Christ. When you are sold out to the things that Christ wants and carry the burden of His call on your life, forgetting all that is in your past, then you are approaching maturity. It is an identity that says, “Not my will but yours.” It is an attachment to Him and His desires that transcends your desires and thoughts. It is balanced by feeding on the very substance of Christ , His love, relationship, delight and joy. But it means giving ourselves deeply to Him. It is the walking with Him in resurrection, which implies a crucifixion.
You are mature if you carry out Christ’s calling. What do you think? Feel free to join the conversation. Happy Canada Day to you. Cheer on Christ (and Canada) with a deep sense of maturity.

I think you are right. Maturity has a lot to do with "unity in diversity". A mosiac of cultures wearing the same jersey. A blend of individuals and cultures with "one heart and one mind" to serve Christ (Eph 2).
And as you imply, for that to happen, something's got to give. And that means there are things we need to give up, let go, and release.
Perhaps that's why maturity is so elusive?
